How to get fishtail plaits like Cheryl and co
Posted by Jo Roberts on February 23, 2011

Plaits were one of the hottest hair trends towards the end of last year and they only seem to be getting more and more popular in 2011. Braids are still all over the red carpets and catwalks, with stars such as Nicole Richie, Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson all putting their own twist on the style.
If you want to join the braidy bunch, then you will find clip-in hair extensions a godsend. Clip them in at the nape of your neck to give you more hair to play with as you start weaving your way to one of the hottest looks.
Plaits are also a good choice if your hair isn’t it great condition, as this season’s are far from sleek, with ‘messed-up bed hair’ being the way forward.
Most of us know how to create a plait, but what about those ‘fishtail’ styles which we keep seeing on our favourite celebs, such as Cheryl Cole?
Fishtail braids are indeed a little tricky to master and take a bit of patience, but with a little practice, you’ll soon be a pro. Here’s how you do it:
- Bring all your hair round to one side of your head and split into two sections — like ponytails, still keeping them on the one side.
- Take a small section from the outer side of one of the ponytails, wrap it around and tuck into the other main strand.
- Repeat with the other side and continue down the length of the plait.
- The more detail you want to see in your plait the smaller pieces you’ll need to pull in
- When you reach the end, be sure to pull it all in tightly
